As you're in the process of finding out about MCSE training programs, you'll probably be in one of these categories: Maybe you're thinking of completely changing your working life to the field of computers, and your research tells you there's a huge demand for people with the right qualifications. Instead you're currently an IT professional - and you want to enhance your CV with the Microsoft qualification.

Always make sure you see evidence that the training provider you're using is definitely teaching with the latest version from Microsoft. A lot of students are left in a mess when they discover they've been educated in an outdated MCSE program which will require an up-date. Don't use training companies who are only trying to make a sale. Ask for comprehensive, personal guidance to verify that you're taking the right decisions. Don't be shoe-horned into a one-size-fits-all course by an inadequate outfit.

Don't forget: the course itself or the accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the job or career that you want is. Many trainers unfortunately completely prioritise the piece of paper. It's not unheard of, for instance, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study only to end up putting 20 long years into a career that does nothing for you, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct research at the outset.

Stay tuned-in to what it is you're trying to achieve, and build your study action-plan from that - don't do it the other way round. Stay focused on the end-goal and ensure that you're training for an end-result you'll still be enjoying many years from now. Long before starting a particular learning course, you'd be well advised to talk through individual job requirements with a skilled advisor, to ensure the study path covers all that is required.

How the program is actually delivered to you is usually ignored by most students. In what way are your training elements sectioned? And in what sequence and what control do you have at what pace it arrives? Many companies enrol you into some sort of program spread over 1-3 years, and send out each piece as you pass each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: What if for some reason you don't get to the end of every single section? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Through no fault of your own, you may go a little slower and consequently not get all your materials.

Truth be told, the perfect answer is to have a copy of their prescribed order of study, but get all the study materials at the start. Meaning you've got it all in the event you don't complete everything as fast as they'd like.

Locating job security nowadays is incredibly rare. Businesses often remove us from the workplace with very little notice - as and when it suits them. It's possible though to reveal market-level security, by searching for areas in high demand, coupled with shortages of trained staff.

A rather worrying British e-Skills study brought to light that more than 26 percent of computing and IT jobs cannot be filled because of a huge deficit of well-trained staff. Meaning that for each 4 job positions available across IT, there are barely three qualified workers to do them. Gaining the appropriate commercial computing exams is therefore a 'Fast Track' to a long-term as well as worthwhile livelihood. Quite simply, gaining new qualifications in IT during the next year or two is most likely the best career choice you could ever make.

Ensure all your certifications are current and what employers are looking for - you're wasting your time with courses which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you'd printed it yourself). Unless the accreditation comes from a conglomerate such as Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco or CompTIA, then chances are it will have been a waste of time - as it'll be an unknown commodity.
